What is Helicopter Shot & Which Players Have Used It? | CBTF News

Cricket is a creative game. You get to watch cricketers come up with innovative tactics to get runs and take wickets. Each nation has unique playing conditions and its method for playing excellent cricket as it gained popularity and diversification. Due to the bowl's extreme aridity and rapid roughening, bowlers in the subcontinent developed the reverse swing technique. The ability to bowl swinging in hazy weather is something that English bowlers have perfected. However, pitches wear out in the subcontinent, and spinners rule the game. Similarly, batters have a strategy for dominating the bowlers and adapting their shots to the situation.

Every team's goal in limited overs is accumulating as many runs as possible. To do this, batters have introduced novel, unorthodox shots that have revolutionized the batting game.

The cricketers who conceived some of the shots are aware of some that have received widespread notoriety. The Helicopter Shot was first used by Mahindra Singh Dhoni, who also introduced the Switch Hit by Kevin Petersen, the Upper Cut by Sachin Tendulkar, the Dilly Scoop by TM Dilshan, the Marillier Shot by Douglas Marillier, and the Eoin Morgan Reverse Sweep.

Who Invented Helicopter Shot to MS Dhoni?

Muhammad Singh Santosh Lal, a friend from his youth who played this stroke to impress his girl, was the one who taught Dhoni or Mahi how to play it. Childhood best friends Mahi and Santosh played cricket together. Together, they were railroad employees who traveled to their respective state tournaments. They used to call it the "Thappad Shot" or the "Slap Shot," and Mahi would urge Santosh to show him how to play it, and Mahi would give him samosas in exchange. Sadly, pancreatitis caused Santosh to die at the young age of 32.

Where Did the Name Come From?

Under its name, the Helicopter shot is self-explanatory. The bat spins 360 degrees in the air as the ball is whipped with tremendous force, like helicopter blades. The ball launches into the air after making contact with the bat in a manner akin to a helicopter taking off. The shot gained additional notoriety when PepsiCo produced a commercial before the 2011 ICC Cricket

World Cup in which Dhoni demonstrated how to execute the shot. Mahi made this play for the first time against England in a game played in Goa in 2006 while James Anderson, a fast bowler, was bowling. The moment the photo was seen for the first time, commentators' spines tingled, and they were all in awe of it.

Helicopter Shot – When & Where?

When bowlers bowl, Dhoni plays the helicopter shot in the final overs. Bowlers bowl yorker lengths to halt the flow of runs.

Playing a yorker is challenging, especially for hitting the six. Thanks to this hit, the batters now have a chance to score and can put up a significant total on the board. After being struck by the bat, the ball is propelled into the air and lands in the stands over midwicket or long on. Bowlers hardly ever have a chance to bowl to Dhoni because he plays this shot frequently. Dhoni is so destructive in the final portion of the innings.

Other cricket players now use the shot as well. You get to see Afghan teenager Rashid Khan practice his shot. After seeing Hardik Pandya do it, fans have begun to evaluate who is better at playing the shot between the two.

The appeal of the helicopter shot has grown over time. It has drawn several new players to the sport and has been added as a new stroke in the cricket shots manual. Dhoni might have easily claimed credit for the shot, but he remembered where it came from. Mahi learns how to play the shot from Santosh Lal in the Bollywood film "M.S. Dhoni-The Untold Story," based on Mahi's life. Mahi is usually the first person mentioned while discussing the helicopter shot. However, Mahi has given the proper credit to the deserving individual. What sort of a guy is he? He is the one who has every reason to be loved by their followers.
