For example, commentators are saying the batter played towards the long-off or silly mid-on. Commentators always use technical terms, and it becomes crucial for us to understand the technicalities. If we see the cricket news, the name of fielding positions changes according to the right and left-hand batter. If we call a side off for the right-handed batter then the same side will be called on-side for the left-handed batter.

Basic of the Field Positions

The cricket field is divided into three parts, and the captain places the fielder in the field according to the game situation.

1. The Close Catching Infield

It is the closest area near the batsman and is specially placed for catching. All the positions are specially for catching and do not give focus on saving runs. Wicket-keeper, slip, gully, leg slip, leg gully, silly point, silly mid-off, short leg, and silly mid-on are the close-catching infield positions. If we see the sports news cricket, the close catching infield position except for wicket-keeper and slip are rare in the white ball matches. The close-catching infield is aggressively used in tests to pressurize the batter and take wickets.

2. The Inner Ring

The 30-yard circle is also known as the inner ring circle and is used to stop the singles. Captains have to place the fielder in the 30-yard circle due to the fielding restrictions. A balanced position is essential in the inner ring, so the fielder can move to the left and right. Balls come toward the fielder very fast, and they have to be prepared for stopping the run and catch.

3. The Outfield

The area around the boundary rope or outside of the 30-yard circle is known as the outfield. Captains placed the fielder in this area to stop the boundaries and catch the ball when the batter tried to hit the maximum run.

Position of Fielders

Captain can place the fielder anywhere on the field according to the cricket rule, but they place it in a specific place to take advantage. Fielder is placed according to the strength of the batsman.

Wicket Keeper

It is the most important fielding position that every team has to fill. Wicketkeeper stays behind the batter, and the standing distance depends on the bowler. They will stand close to the wicket if a spinner is bowling and 20 meters away from the batsman if a fast bowler is bowling.

Slip

Another crucial field position and you will see it at the start of the game in white ball cricket. It is mostly used in test cricket. According to cricket news, the first slip is close to the wicketkeeper and goes to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th slips.

Gully

The extension of the slip is known as a gully, and it is a catching position. Gully is placed according to the pitch and batter history.

Point

The point is placed into the 30-yard circle and placed at the off-side of the batsman. The distance of the point to the batter depends on the pace of the bowler. When the bowler targets the offside with pace, chances become that the batter will hit the bowl toward the point.

Cover

One of the high working places where fielders have to be extra alert. It is the favorite place to batter where they drive the ball. Fielder mainly stands at the edge of the 30-yard or inner circle.

Extra Cover

It is similar to the cover, and the fielder stands wider to the cover and is more straight to the batter. The fielder will stand at extra cover depending on the captain, bowler, and the strength and weakness of the batter.

Mid-on

Mid-on is located on the side of the batter and near the batter. Fielder is generally placed at the edge of the 30-yard circle.

Mid- Wicket

It is another important place on the leg side of the batter. This place is to stop the single.

Fine Leg

It is a tactical position where the fielder tries to not give any advantage to the batsman. Batter tuck the ball to the leg side on the fast bowler and play sweep shot to the spinner. This position keeps the batter double-minded.

Third Man

An important place in the outfield to stop the boundaries. When a batter gets an edge on a fast bowler, the ball will travel to the boundary very fast. Fielder is placed at 45 degrees to the batter.

Long on

Another position in the outfield and onside of the batter. It is the most used position because most batters try to hit in this area.

Long off

Another position in the outfield and off the side of the batter. Fielder is placed near the boundary rope in the outfield.
