The victory ended Australia's seven-match winless streak at World Cups since picking up three points against Serbia in 2010. The team, which had lost 4-1 to France in its first game, fought hard against Tunisia before Mitchell Duke scored its sole goal to put Australia in control. Duke scored with a header in the 23rd minute of the game after a feed from Craig Goodwin was deflected from one of the Australian defenders. Notably, Tunisia drew 0-0 with Denmark in their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
