Among the different tournaments, Ranji Trophy became widely popular in Indian domestic cricket & inaugurated in 1935. It is called the red ball championship where multiple teams from different regions in India participate to play. This Ranji trophy was named after the first Indian who played international cricket - Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II.
Ranji Trophy is still a gateway for the Indian cricket team. It will be counted as the best platform to showcase the talents & impress selectors. Many popular cricketers in Indian teams, such as Rishab Pant in 2016, Mayank Agarwal & Hanuma Vihari are primary examples who made it to Indian team selection with the help of the Ranji Trophy tournaments.
Currently, Ranji Trophy has 38 teams - 28 state teams, four teams representing union territories, and the rest of two teams representing army forces mainly railway & services. Mumbai shines like a star team in the competition by winning Ranji Trophy 41 times.
Duleep Trophy This format was started in 1961-62 as an interzonal competition. From 2016 to 2020, under the Duleep trophy, four seasons have been organized with three teams - India Red, India Blue, and India Green. Recently in 2021-22, the tournament was set back to its original format of five teams representing the north zone, south zone, west zone, central zone, and east zone. Among these teams, the west zone has won the maximum number of matches - 19 times.
The future trend of the Duleep trophy shares the sign of a bright future by raising the bar for young Indian players.
Irani Trophy Commenced in 1959-60, this trophy tournament started as the Ranji Trophy, where the winner played against the rest of the Indian team.
The Irani trophy has contributed to interesting matches like Mumbai Vs Rest of India 2003Â (Mumbai playing XI & ROI playing XI). Another memorable one is Delhi Vs Rest of India, 2008 where players like Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kholi & Virendra Sehwag mark their performance. With busy international schedules, the BCCI couldn't manage to gather international players for the Irani Cup. So, the possibility is a little bleak of the next Irani Cup matches where Indian players will show up again.
