The Battle of the Titans: Mumbai Indians vs. Chennai Super Kings - A Rivalry Renewed

IPL (Indian Premier League) is one of the biggest leagues that has been played since 2008. However, IPL cricket news is that Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the two teams of IPL that are the most successful teams of IPL. Both teams have won titles for five teams. Both teams have faced each other in the final multiple times and are laced with high-quality players, which made the match even more interesting and enthralling. Fans also called the rivalry as El Clásico. In this blog, we explore the rivalry between CSK and MI.

IPL 2008: First Encounter

If we see IPL news, the rivalry between CSK and MI started with the first meeting at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. CSK batted first and put the mammoth total of 208 runs on the scoreboard. Their top-order batter did a terrific job as Matthew Hayden scored 81(46), Suresh Raina scored 53, and MS Dhoni finished the inning with 30(16). MI came to chase, but the tendon performance of the batter pushed them closer to the target. However, MI required 19 runs in the final over to win the match, but they scored 12 runs and lost the match by six runs. Despite a high-scoring match, MI lost by only six runs, and rivalry started between both teams.

IPL 2010: Final

According to IPL news and updates, Mumbai Indians qualified in the final for the first time in IPL 2010; on the other hand, it was the second time for CSK in the last three years. However, CSK lost the final in the inaugural season of IPL to Rajasthan Royals in the last ball thriller. Men in Yellow was the favorite to win the IPL and played against MI at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. CSK batted first and put 168 runs on the scoreboard. CSK lost the three wickets after a good start, then Suresh Raina came to the rescue and scored 57(35). His innings helped CSK reach from 68/3 to 168/5.

MI came to chase but lost the opener, Shikhar Dhawan, at 1. Muttiah Muralitharan and Ravichandran Ashwin were very economical and were put under pressure. MI scored 146-9 and lost the match by 22 runs.

IPL 2013: Final

Once again, both teams faced each other in the final of the IPL 2013. Both the teams had faced in qualifier 1, where CSK defeated MI. CSK posted 192-1 in 20 overs with the help of Hussey and Raina outstanding innings. MI came to chase and scored only 144 runs before getting out. CSK made it to the final for the fourth time in a row. Moreover, MI won the second qualifier and played against CSK at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. MI posted 148-9 with an outstanding finish of 60 runs in 32 balls. CSK scored 125-9, and apart from MS Dhoni, no other batter scored runs. MI won the title for the first time.

IPL 2015: Final

Once again, MI and CSK came against each other in the final of the IPL. This was the third final between both teams. It was the sixth IPL final for CSK, and it was the third IPL final for MI. Mumbai posted 202-5 on the scoreboard with two half-centuries. CSK came to chase the mammoth score and scored only 161-8 and lost the match by 41 runs. It was the second IPL title for MI and equalized CSK's record.

IPL 2019: Final

CSK and MI came against each other 4th time in the IPL final. It was one of the best thrilling final matches; MI won the match by one run and won the title for the fourth time. MI scored 149-8, and CSK scored only 148-7. Lasith Malinga took the wicket of Thakur on the last ball, helping his team to win the title.

The match between MI and CSK has been one of the biggest events of IPL from the start. However, the intensity of the contest has been reduced in the last three years, but whenever they have met, fans expect too much from them.
