The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back in the spotlight with the announcement of the TATA IPL 2025 Player Auction List. This mega event is set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, 2024. The auction will see a total of 574 players go under the hammer, with 366 Indian players and 208 overseas players. The IPL 2025 auction is termed a 'mega auction' because it allows franchises to rebuild their squads from scratch. Every three years, teams are allowed to retain only a limited number of players, and this time, they can keep a maximum of six players. The auction will kick off with two sets of marquee players. The first set includes star players like Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Mitchell Starc1. The second set features Yuzvendra Chahal, Liam Livingstone, David Miller, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj. These players are expected to attract fierce bidding from the franchises.

Indian players like Ishan Kishan, R Ashwin, Harshal Patel, and Khaleel Ahmed will be up for grabs, along with overseas stars like David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, and Faf du Plessis. The auction will be held over two days, starting at 3:00 PM IST on both November 24 and 25. The event will be broadcast live on Star Sports Network and streamed on the JioCinema app and website1. The bidding process will begin with the marquee players, followed by capped players divided into sets based on their specialization. Uncapped players will be auctioned in the later rounds, with an accelerated phase for players from 117 to 5741.
Each team has a total purse of ₹120 crore, but some of this amount has already been spent on retaining players before the auction. Punjab Kings have the largest remaining purse at ₹110.5 crore, while Rajasthan Royals have the smallest at ₹41 crore. The franchises will need to strategize carefully to make the most of their budgets and build balanced squads.
The size of each franchise's squad is a maximum of 25 players, with a minimum of 18 players. There are ten teams, so a maximum of 250 players in total. Each squad can have a maximum of eight overseas players, with 70 slots available for overseas players at the auction.
Teams have varying Right-to-Match (RTM) options based on their retention. For example, Mumbai Indians have RTM options for one uncapped player, while Sunrisers Hyderabad have RTM options for one uncapped player. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have RTM options for three players, and Delhi Capitals have RTM options for two players. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals do not have any RTM options.
