Rohit Sharma, the Indian ODI and Test captain, has always been passionate about representing India. Currently leading Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, he recently shared his thoughts ahead of a crucial Test series against England. "Personally, to me representing the country was the pinnacle - I wouldn't put Test Cricket over T20 cricket or T20 Cricket over Test Cricket - For me all three formats are equally important," Rohit said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
Versatility Across Formats
Rohit’s versatility shines across cricket’s formats. Having retired from T20Is after captaining India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title, he insists Test cricket, ODIs, and T20s are equally vital, each demanding unique skills. His adaptability has cemented his legacy as one of India’s most successful captains. Recently, he led an unbeaten India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, defeating New Zealand in the final.
A Crucial Test Series Awaits
India’s next challenge is a five-Test series against England, starting June 20, marking the beginning of the new World Test Championship cycle. Fresh off IPL 2025, Rohit will lead the team against England’s formidable bowling attack. The series promises to be a thrilling contest, with India aiming to set a strong tone for the championship.
Pace Duo’s Fitness in Focus
Rohit hinted that India’s pace spearheads, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, could feature if fully fit. "We wanted Bumrah, Shami and other bowlers to be 100% fit for the England tour. If we have a full-fit team, then obviously we will have a great series in England," he noted on the podcast. Bumrah, injured during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, and Shami, sidelined since a 2023 injury from the ODI World Cup final, are key to India’s plans.
India’s Prospects
With a fit squad, India could dominate. Fans are buzzing with excitement for this red-ball showdown, eager to see Rohit and his team tackle England’s challenge. The series will test India’s mettle and set the stage for their World Test Championship journey.
