Pele, the Brazilian Football Legend, Dies at 82 After a Long-Battle with Cancer
The three-time World Cup champion and Brazilian football star Pele passed away at the age of 82. He was largely regarded as the first international football superstar. Pele underwent treatment for colon cancer after having a tumour surgically removed in September 2021. He had been ill since November and was being treated in the hospital. At age 17, Pele made his debut for Brazil when he scored three goals in the 1958 World Cup final. Later, he served as the captain of Brazil's 1970 world-beating team, which is widely regarded as the greatest team the world has ever seen. The "golden generation" of Brazil included Pele. He played with players like Nilton Santos, Didi, Garrincha, and Jairzinho, who were all among the top athletes at the time. Pele spent the majority of his career in a state championship rather than a national league. However, his goals are spread across the Rio-Sao Paulo tournament, Copa Libertadores, and international fixtures, including key roles in two World Cup victories, which no other player can claim. Pele won three World Cups, in 1958, 1962, and 1970, though his participation in 1962 was limited due to an injury suffered in the first game that forced him to miss the rest of the tournament. The Brazil legend remains one of the team’s all-time leading scorers with 77 goals. Neymar tied Pele’s record during the latest World Cup. Brazilian players unfurled a huge banner on the field during a quarterfinal in Qatar that included an image of the legendary soccer player during his 1970 World Cup victory. It said nothing but "Pele!" Our sincerest condolences for his family and friends at this time. The world lost a gem!
