In international cricket, players' batting abilities have improved significantly, resulting in numerous high-scoring ODI contests during the previous 10-15 years. Small boundaries have tilted the game more toward batters, which is why the most excellent
team score in an ODI has exceeded 400 marks numerous times. There have been several occasions in ODI history when a side has scored 400 runs.
Let's explore the top ten most significant team scores in men's ODIs, from England's sharp innings against Australia at Trent Bridge to South Africa's stunning run chase in Johannesburg in March 2006.

Jos Buttler batted a devastating 150 off 77 balls to help England reach a staggering 418-6 with the series level at 1-1. Before Buttler and Eoin Morgan combined for 204 runs to put the tourists above the 400-run threshold, Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow scored 50s.
With two balls left in the innings, Buttler eventually fell, and West Indies knew they would need to complete the second-highest successful chase in ODI history if they wanted to keep England from taking the series lead. Chris Gayle's outstanding 162 brought them dangerously close, but England ripped through the back end in the final stages, leaving the hosts all out and 29 runs short on 389.

In Indore eight years prior, the West Indies were destroyed when India set a challenging 418-5. The game's standout player was Virender Sehwag, who scored 219 runs off 149 balls, at the time the most remarkable men's ODI total ever. Sehwag scored 142 runs just from boundaries, scoring 25 fours and seven sixes. Denesh Ramdin scored 96 run-a-ball in response, and the visitors were outscored by 153 runs.

For the second time in four games, South Africa scored over 400 runs as they easily cruised to a 3-0 series victory over Zimbabwe. Boucher scored 147 without being stopped to record his first ODI century in his 220th game. Boucher was omitted from the field on 7, 59, 105, 123, 140, and 144.

What else must be said about perhaps the best ODI of all time? Before this game, no team had ever scored more than 400 runs in a single contest, much less managed to do it in the second innings. In March 2006, Ricky Ponting's 164 from 105 deliveries helped Australia score 434-4. Australia was unquestionably headed for a 3-2 series victory, with the series knotted at 2-2.

Australia's record was broken in just 49.5 overs as South Africa won the match by 438 runs with one ball remaining when the final couple came to the crease.
Boeta Dippenaar's unfortunate hack on a Nathan Bracken ball in the second over gave the Proteas' run chase a disastrous start. But when they added 187 for the second wicket, Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs unleashed a sensational counterattack. The hosts crossed the finish line with Boucher's 50-not-out and Gibbs' maximum score of 175 for the team. A wild conclusion to a fantastic game.

Nine years later, South Africa was level at 2-2 heading into the decisive game of another drama series. This time, India was the loser as visitors to Mumbai scored hundreds from Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, and AB de Villiers. South Africa defeated India by 214 runs after India disintegrated in their attempt to chase down their enormous score, scoring just 224 from their allotted 36 overs.

AB de Villiers' record-breaking performance against the West Indies featured 16 sixes in one inning, a 16-ball 50, and a 31-ball century. With fewer than 12 overs left, the South Africa captain entered the crease after Rilee Rossouw was dismissed for 128 but still accumulated 149 runs.
De Villiers completed his tonne in 40 minutes with Hashim Amla (153). After being caught in the deep, he finally fell one run short of his 150, although he did contribute to the hosts' rise from 247-1 to 439-2. At the same venue where the Proteas upset Australia in 2006, the West Indies could not duplicate South Africa's run-chasing heroics, finishing 291-7, 148 runs short.

Four months after Australia and South Africa reached 400 at the Wanderers, Sri Lanka broke the mark in the final over of their match against the Netherlands in Amstelveen. Sanath Jayasuriya took the lead with a spectacular 157 off 104 balls, and Tillakaratne Dilshan scored an equally impressive 117 off 79. After losing eight wickets, the visitors still needed 30 runs to surpass the global record. Still, Dilhara Fernando and Dilshan were able to bat together and help Sri Lanka pass the 440-run threshold.

Ten years later, England beat Sri Lanka's record as Eoin Morgan's team reached 444-3 thanks to Jos Buttler's four off the last pitch of the innings.
Records were broken when England destroyed Pakistan at Trent Bridge with 59 boundaries, including 16 sixes. With a score of 171 off 122 balls, Alex Hales took the lead and earned the distinction of having the highest individual score in ODI cricket by an Englishman. Jos Buttler's devastating 90 from 51 helped the hosts over the finish line before England's attack quickly dispatched Pakistan's batters to win by 169 runs.

Hales took the lead with 147, and Jonny Bairstow smashed a damaging 139 off the third position. Soon after, England broke their record at the exact location. They defeated Australia with an astounding 481-6 a year before they would thrillingly win the World Cup.
England appeared to be in a position to pass the 500-run mark for the whole of the innings, but Hales and Morgan were bowled in quick succession to halt the visitors' momentum. With their innings, England would win by 242 runs, proving what many people already knew: 500+ in one innings is not a question of if; it's a question of when.
