Amidst a zesty wave of much-awaited Legends League Cricket, Gujarat Giants and India Capitals clashed in the first match on the grounds of Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After winning the toss, Gujarat Giants decided to bowl and follow the run chase of India Capitals. In the first over, Solomon Mire spruced up the match by starting off his innings with a boundary. Mazakadza joined Mire but left the pitch soon after the catch of Graeme Swann and IC stood at 19 with a wicket in 3.1 overs. Before the 3rd over could end, Apanna got another wicket giving no more runs. The environment in the cricket didn’t seem to favor IC much as the spinner Rayad Emrit added another wicket to GG at 21/3.
Denesh Ramdin contributed to saving the dignity of the IC by making a boundary move in the next few balls. Meanwhile, Graeme Swann got his first breakthrough in the match, taking the wicket of Suhail Sharma who just played a five-ball duck. Ramdin stood tough while pulling away the shot from Thisara Perera and moved the figures to 74 and departed from the ground; IC at 74/5 in 11.4 overs. After going off in the first ball, Rajat Bhatia got another woeful wicket straight to keeper Parthiv Patel. Perera achieved the feat with two wickets in the same over.
Ashley Nurse played a couple of good shots with back-to-back fours and sixes, seeming to be eyeing hitting 50 single-handedly. He scored 45 off just 24 balls. Taking out the slog sweep and boundary hits, Ashley brings huge numbers to IC, crossing a century 133/6 in 16.2 overs. In the middle, Liam Plunkett lost his wicket on a slow ball, scoring just 15 runs. At the end of the innings, Nurse slammed maximum runs for India Capitals and remained unbeaten at 103 off 43 balls. IC ended their game at 179/7 in 20 overs.
With Gujarat Titans taking the charge on the field, they got their first boundary in the first over against a poor delivery by Pawan Suyal, giving 5 wide balls. For the duo of Virendra Sehwag and Kelvin O Brien, Mitchell Johnson gave wonderful deliveries in the second over. Facing the fierce bowling from Plunkett, Brien continued to cut away the balls for successful fours while Sehwag got possible singles, taking GG to 40 with no wickets at 3.5 overs and Sehwag lost his wicket at 4 overs. On Pankaj Singh’s attack, Giants took the game a little deep and stood at 82/1 in 8 overs. Likewise, Nurse of India Capitals, Brien was on fire; pairing with Parthiv Patel, Giants crossed the century, taking GG to 110 in 10 overs with one wicket.
Kevin O'Brien was not in the mood to depart from the pitch and continued to bang wonderful hits and got his century of the first match while facing the marvelous delivery by Ashley Nurse, Mitchell, and other bowlers, taking GG to 169/2 in 16.3 overs. Scoring 107 runs, Kevin O Brien got caught out with GG at 175/4. A wide ball Tambe gave Gujarat Giants an anticlimactic victory by 3 wickets against India Capitals.
