Lanka Premier League 2023 Match 9: Kandy Thrashed Jaffna Kings by 8 Wickets

In the 9^th match of Lanka Premier League 2023 played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, B-Love Kandy and Jaffna Kings squared off. Kandy won the toss and opted to bowl first and the decision turned out to be quite right for the side. The veteran Angelo Mathews got both openers in his first two overs, which was where it all began. He caused the ball to swing, and it appeared as though he had turned back time to take two wickets.

Due to the shaky start, the middle was forced to bat slowly. They stayed in there and tried to recover, but Hridoy, Miller, and Priyamal Perera all failed to last after starting. After that, it was just a procession of one Jaffna batter following another. Without Wellalage's last-ditch attempt, Jaffna's innings would have ended with fewer than 100 runs scored. After 20 overs, Jaffna could only manage to put 117-9. The score didn't seem to be too difficult for Kandy to chase after, especially after the number of runs we witnessed earlier in the day in the first game.

Jaffna's batting display has been terrible. After deciding to bowl first, Kandy was thrilled with what they were able to accomplish. It appeared that the pitch had slowed down significantly from the manner Kandy began this chase, and for a brief moment, it appeared that Jaffna's total was at least fairly acceptable. But once Fakhar Zaman and skipper Hasaranga, who moved up to no. 3, let free, all of those pesky ideas were put to rest and the crowd was treated to a good display. They took advantage of every bowling opportunity and won by 7 overs.

Some poor fielding from Jaffna also assisted them along the way. Hasaranga scored the go-ahead runs and totaled an undefeated 52 off 22 balls. What an acceleration increase from Kandy! They were moving slowly and scoring less than six runs per over until the ninth over, when they abruptly picked up the pace and scored 76 runs in the next five overs to win the match. Today was basically an awful day all around for Jaffna. Kandy won the match by 8 wickets, chasing the target in just 13 overs.
