In India, more people started taking interest in cricket by the 1970s. This was the period when new spinners were brought into the team.
Spin bowling is one of the techniques of bowling cricket wherein spin bowlers use their wrists, fingers, and forearms to apply spin to the ball. They use specific hand techniques with the aim of deceiving batsmen and making it harder for them to hit the ball. Spin bowlers deliver the ball to impart spin onto it for maintaining the same rate of revolution. If a pitch is dry or worn out, it is easier for the bowlers to spin the ball and take wickets.
Some bowlers know the strengths and weaknesses of the batsman. As per past experiences and matches played against a batsman, a bowler may know if the player can hit spin balls or not. Then, bowlers use strategies in a way that a batsman misses the shot or loses a wicket.
Offside and Leg side are two types of spin bowling. To know more about offside bowling, you can have a look at its meaning and types.
In offside bowling, bowlers spin the ball from the offside to the leg side of a batsman. The ball drifts toward a right-handed batsman, and away from a left-handed batsman.
Offside bowlers try to induce batsmen to play a false shot so that they either lose the wicket or their shot is caught by the fielding team. They use pace and mostly rely on accuracy.
In comparison to offside bowling, leg spinners deliver and spin the ball toward the offside of the batsman. In this type of bowling, the bowlers aim to bowl in a way that batsmen hit the ball and it touches the stumps, thereby getting out of the game.
There are many types of offside bowling. Some of these are mentioned below:
In this type of bowling, a spin bowler grips the ball with his index and middle fingers. This is a traditional type of offside bowling as the bowler uses fingers to prevent a batsman from hitting the ball and scoring a wicket.
Top spinner is one of the common bowling types wherein a bowler imparts top spin on ball, which leads to a greater bounce on the pitch, making it harder for a batsman to hit it in the air. Unlike a regular off-spinner, a top spinner puts a greater spin on the ball so that it can bounce quicker and higher.
In this type of off-spin bowling, the ball turns away from the right-handed batsman and spins from the leg side to the offside. The bowler deceives the batsman and ensures that the player does not hit the shot properly and scores a run.
In an arm ball, the ball kids through off the pitch and travel straight in the direction of the arm. It is an out-swinging straight delivery, wherein the ball does not turn much. Since the bowler does not spin, the fingers of the offside spinners are behind the ball.
In this type of bowling, the bowler spins a ball by flicking it with an index finger like a carrom player does.
