IPL 2023: SWOT Analysis of Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is a franchise cricket team representing Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh part of India. LSG team's home ground is the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. In the debut season, no matches were played by the LSG team in their home ground during the outbreak of covid-19 in India, instead matches held in Maharashtra. In the 2023 IPL season, there is a high prediction that the team will play in their home ground stadium.

In 2021 the team was formed with Sanjeev Goenka as the principal owner. In their debut season, Lucknow Super Giants qualified for the playoff matches. The team captain is one of the famous Indian Players - KL Rahul, and the coach appointed as Andy Flower along with Gautam Gambhir's mentorship. RPSG Group is the owner of the LSG team, which once owned the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise in 2016 & 2017.

In the mega auction of February 2022, the LSG team bought many all-rounders players, the franchise comprises top international players: Quinton de Kock, Mark Wood, Krunal Pandya, and Marcus Stoinis. In the first season, the LSG team held the third position in the table and qualified for the playoffs. However, they got knocked out by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator match.

SWOT Analysis of Lucknow Super Giants

LSG's Strength

The core strength of the LSG team lies in their most frightening batting lineup of players, among the major franchises of IPL tournaments. One of the best players KL Rahul led the team from the front with more than 600 runs in the 2018 season. Quinton de Kock has also been a star performer delivering the best overs, and contributing to winning matches. Another factor is their middle order with Deepak Hooda & new player Nicholas Pooran with allrounder Stoinis & Krunal Pandya will probably balance out the lineup for IPL 2023.

Another strong point for LSG is their all-rounder backup for prominent players so even if they are injured, backup players can handle the pressure of overs. Mark Wood withdrew his name from the IPL 2022 season. However, in the upcoming IPL 2023, there is a high chance that he will debut for the LSG team and become a valuable player for the squad.

LSG's Weakness

Lucknow Super Giants gather the best talents in the auction to build a strong team. However, the team's weakness lies in this variety of players, KL Rahul played for India, Quinton de Kock from Protea, Pooran played for West Indies, and Marcus Stoinis played for Australia. All these players barely played a match together, this could bring a sign of weakness for LSG in IPL 2023. Other Players like Krunal, Hooda, Mohsin, Avesh, and Bishnoi played for different states of India as domestic players, it will be new for them to enter the playground together. It will be interesting to watch how LSG tackle this challenge, there is a probability that the team can turn their weakness into strength.

LSG's Opportunity

For the IPL season 2023, LSG got the young talent to get a chance delivering their best performances, as Krunal Pandya already surprised fans in past matches. Also, there is high hope for Deepak Hooda as a part of the Indian T20, he got an opportunity to recreate his name in cricket. Another opportunity is open for Moshin Khan in the absence of ace players Bumrah and Bhuvi, he can establish his name with the best performances.

LSG's Threat

Lucknow Super Giants has a high threat with Mark Wood's injury, he got injured in the second test match against Pakistan. So, his injury and rule out can be a big problem for the LSG team as Wood's performance can support upcoming IPL matches.

Nicholas Pooran's bad form in the last two seasons of IPL can be another threat factor for the team. This player was bought for a higher price which builds a risk if he underperforms in coming matches.
