The 1st ODI of India vs South Africa played at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg was expected to be a nail-biting affair but it turned out to be a complete one-sided match. South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. After choosing to bat, South Africa was dismissed for 116 runs. As he lifts the ball, Arshdeep leads his squad off the field. India should have taken a wicket off the opening delivery, but they chose not to review Hendricks' leg before the wicket. That barely made a difference as Arshdeep made back-to-back deliveries, dismissing Hendricks and van der Dussen. Tony de Zorzi made the decision to try and score points, which ultimately proved to be his undoing. After Klaasen fell to Arshdeep for the fourth time, South Africa was reduced to 52/4 in just ten overs.
When Avesh Khan was introduced, the host's situation only got worse. The seamen received some aid, and the Indian bowlers made rather basic plans. A couple of bad shots also aided their case. With a maximum score of 33, Phehlukwayo was dismissed by Arshdeep in his last over to secure his first wicket. Kuldeep then concluded the session. India needs to win right now with 117. The innings didn't get off to a strong start, and Avesh Khan and Arshdeep have been particularly effective with the ball, picking up 4 and 5 wickets, respectively for India.
In reply to this, India wrapped up the match within 17 overs. India lost Gaikwad early in the innings but Sai & Iyer stablise the inning and brought the team to the door of win. The duo scored half-centuries, helping India win the match by 8 wickets. India takes the lead 1-0. They've produced a highly successful show. You would refer to this as a shellacking. India had hammered South Africa in the World Cup, and this appeared to be a continuation of that. Did it really matter that India didn't have Jadeja, Shami, Bumrah, Kohli, or Sharma? Not at all. India ruled supremely. SA did not show up. They batted after winning the toss. Then Arshdeep gave an incredible performance. Avesh provided him with tremendous support, as the two of them shared a fifer while taking nine wickets between them. Phehlukwayo led the pack in scoring with 33, but it came too late. But he made sure they crossed the triple-digit threshold.
