India Tour of South Africa: India vs South, 1st T20I Preview

The highly-anticipated 1st T20I between South Africa and India will kick off the three-match series at the iconic Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban on Sunday, December 10th, 2023.

The Proteas come into the series with a new-look team, featuring several debutants, including Nandre Burger (left-arm quick). They will be looking to build on their recent success in the format, having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Key players to watch include Aiden Markram, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, and Andile Phehlukwayo.

With Kagiso Rabada rested and Anrich Nortje hurt, the fast bowling department is already lacking in experience. Lungi Ngidi's retirement on Friday due to a sprained ankle erodes that even more. Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock are not in the batting lineup.

India boasts a more experienced squad, with several players who were part of their T20 World Cup campaign in 2022. They will be aiming to maintain their impressive record against South Africa in the format, having won two of their last four T20I series against them. Look out for performances from Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Rinku Singh.

This is a difficult match to predict, as both teams are evenly matched. However, India's experience and recent success in the format give them a slight edge. The toss could also play a crucial role, with the team batting first likely to have an advantage.

 Key Points:

  • Squad Depth: This series presents a massive opportunity for both teams to test their squad depth, especially with the ICC World T20 2024 around the corner. Fringe players like Matthew Breetzke (SA) and Mukesh Kumar (IND) will be looking to make their mark.
  • Bowling Strength: Both teams possess a strong bowling attack, with the likes of
  • Gerald Coetzee
  • , Andile Phehlukwayo, Arshdeep, and Siraj capable of tearing through batting lineups.
  • Kingsmead Factor: The Kingsmead Cricket Ground is known for its fast and bouncy surface, which could favor the pace bowlers. Teams batting first have won eight out of the 19 T20Is played here, indicating that the early momentum could be crucial.

Here are some additional factors to consider:

  • Weather conditions: The weather in Durban is expected to be clear and sunny, with temperatures reaching around 28°C.
  • Pitch report: A fair, albeit slow-moving, surface that might be enhanced by the 15 mm of rain predicted for a rainy morning. Wilson Ngobese, who began working as a ground staff member at Kingsmead in 1975 and has served as chief curator since 1999, will also be saying goodbye. Ngobese's final international pitch will be this one.
  • Head-to-Head: India has a slight edge in the head-to-head record, with 13 wins to South Africa's 10 in 24 T20Is.

Overall, this promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the best T20 teams in the world. Don't miss it!
