Key Highlights

  • Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first.

  • India posted 162 runs on the scoreboard with a loss of 5 wickets.

  • Shivam Mavi took 4 wickets in his maiden match while Umran Malik took 2 wickets for India

  • SL could only manage to score 160 in 20 overs.

At Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India and Sri Lanka squared off for the first T20I match. Sri Lanka won the toss and invited India to bat first. To open the batting attack, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill came to the middle on the throw from Rajitha.

Ishan Kishan gave India a good start with taking 17 off the opening over, but Sri Lanka responded as the batters gave in to hitting out and falling victim to the pitch's tactics. At 94/5, Hooda and Axar joined forces, and their 68-run partnership off only 36 balls gave the hosts a total to bowl at. Axar also got the boundaries even though he played a few dots, while Hooda was excellent at putting away the bad balls. With the exception of his final over, Sri Lanka's spinners performed superbly, and Madushanka impressed with his skippy pace and precise lines.

In the run chase, Nissanka and Kusal Mendis came at the crease. Hardik Pandya opened the attack for India. Nissanka was dropped in the first over but soon Shivam Mavi took his first T20I wicket dismissing Nissanka 1(3). Dhananjaya was also sent back to pavilion by Shivam Mavi at 8(6). In the powerplay, SL could only manage to score 35-2. Umran Malik began his over giving only 6 runs. In the next one, Asalanka smashed a lofty six to Chahal. Asalanka was looking promising but was dismissed by Malik at 12 (15). In the 9th over, Kusal Mendis was caught by Samson in the over of Harshal Patel 28 (25).

By the end of 10 overs, the score was 66-4 and India was completely dominating the game.

Soon, Harshal Patel again dismissed Rajapaksa in the 11th over in his style. Shanaka took the charge in Axar’s over while Umran conceded 10 runs as SL tried to pace up the run rate. Chahal didn’t have his day today as Hasaranga smashed consecutive sixes to him. However, Mavi was brought back to the attack and he did his work by dismissing Hasaranga. In the 16th over, the score was 123-6 and SL needed 40 off 24 balls. Sri Lankans tried to charge Indian bowlers. It became a see-sawing game. Karunaratne was the last hope for SL.

Lankans needed 13 off the last over and Axar was asked to bowl the last over. Karunaratne smashed six to Axar on the third ball of the over. SL needed 5 off 3 balls. Rajitha got run out in an attempt to steal a double. SL needed 4 off 1 and

India won by 2 runs as Madushanka got run out on the last ball of the 20th over.
