ICC Test Rankings: Decoding the Red Ball Dominance in International Cricket

ICC team ranking system is developed to identify the most proficient cricket team. The team rankings calculated are different for all three formats of cricket. In this blog, we will particularly talk about ICC test ranking, though there are some factors common to all formats. However, for a test match, it is crucial to be aware of a few things.

Factors Considered for Test Match Rankings

Series points: These are the special points given to the team on the basis of series outcomes. These are valid for one series only and are used to calculate the rating points. Moreover, a string is considered when two matches are played at least between two teams.

Rating Points: Total points earned by a team during the ranking period.

Rating: Average rating points earned per match. It is obtained by dividing the total rating points by the number of matches played.

Ranking: It is the position of the team on the ranking table. The test ranking of a team is calculated through a three-step process.

How Test Ranking Is Determined for the Team?

Series Point: If a team wins a match, then one point will be awarded, half point to both teams if the match is drawn, and zero points in case of losing the match. Moreover, one bonus point will be awarded if a team wins the series.

Rating Points are calculated based on the gap in rating If the rating gap is equal to or less than 40, then the rating point is calculated by the given formula.

[(The teams own series points) x (The opponent rating + 50)] + [(The opponents series points) x (The opponents rating’ 50)].

If the rating gap is more than 40, then the rating point is calculated by the given formula Team with a higher rating  [(The teams own series points) x (The teams own rating + 10)] + [(The opponents series points) x (The teams own rating’ 90)]

Team with a lower rating [(The teams own series points) x (The teams own rating + 90)] + [(The opponents series points) x (The teams own rating 10)]

Based on the rating points calculated, current rating points are added to the predetermined rating. Finally, the ranking is calculated based on rating points.

Reasons Why Test Cricket Is the Best

  • It is considered to be the cricket format that tests the player through a toiling battle. It tests the talent, nettle, and fighting spirit of the player. Cricketers have to fight so hard till the sun sets. The more extended format tests the players attitude and level of preparation so there is no easy way out and due to this, it remains a test of character and a lot more.
  • Though the ODI and T20 formats gain a lot of popularity, the magic of test matches is still unbeaten. Out of 13,000 fans surveyed across 100 different countries in which cricket is a popular sport, a staggering 86% of spectators said they still hold test matches in higher regard.
  • A test match is a game of sessions in which both teams toil to win sessions and takes place over a maximum of five days. In a test match, four innings are played, meaning two per team, and each team gets an equal chance to get the bat and bowl twice. Due to its format, an equilibrium is maintained and the match score shifts quickly.
  • Pitch plays a crucial role in test matches and plays a decisive role in the determination of results. The nature of pitch more or less gets changed often. For instance, the morning session of the test match belongs to the pacers.
  • Due to all this, technically skilled players excel in test matches. Furthermore, the red balls also play a crucial role and are quite different from their white counterparts.
