ICC Bowling Rankings: Celebrating the Masters of Cricket's Bowling Art

ICC ranking is a well-known criterion that we all may hear somehow and somewhere. Well, it is a method developed to accurately measure the best team or player in the world. This ranking system works on all three formats of cricket i.e. test matches, ODI, and T20. The ranking is evaluated separately for men's and women's cricket.

The system of calculations is a bit different for all three formats of cricket. For instance, the factors considered for ranking a bowler are a bit different than that of a batter, so the calculation system varies.

In this blog, we will particularly talk about factors considered to evaluate the bowler's ranking. We will also highlight the top three bowlers in the ICC ODI ranking.

Factors Considered for a Bowler

Wickets Taken and Runs Taken

To take wickets is the first responsibility of a bowler in any team. So, the number of wickets taken contributes to the player's ratings. Additionally, amount of runs conceded by the player contributes to the bowler's ratings.

Batsman Dismissed

If a bowler takes the wicket of a top-ranking batsman, then it adds to the rating points of the bowler. For example, if a bowler took one wicket from Virat Kohli, then he will receive more rating points in comparison to the bowler who took the wicket of Ajinkye Rahane. The reason for this is that Virat Kohli comprises more ratings than Ajinkya Rahane.

Level of Runs Conceded

It works similarly to the level of runs scoring factor of a batsman. For instance, if a bowler takes two wickets for 45 runs in a match where the opposition scored 400 runs, then the bowler will get more rating points than another bowler who takes two wickets for 45 runs in a match where the opposition scored 150 runs. This is simply due to as it is difficult to give away fewer runs than it is in a low-scoring match.

Longer Spell

The bowler who bowls more overs than other bowlers in a team gets some extra credit points added to his

ICC bowling ranking. Even, if the bowler is not able to take a wicket, then even these credit points will add on to his rating points.

Match Outcome

The outcome of a match is a contributing factor not just for a batsman but for the bowlers as well. Bonus points are awarded to the bowler who performs well in a match that ends in a victory. Moreover, higher bonus points are awarded if the bowler performs well against the stronger opponent as compared to a victory against a weaker opponent.
