England tour of West Indies, 2023: West Indies vs England, 2nd ODI Preview

The West Indies' chances of winning ODI cricket have been fading for some time now. They haven't had many noteworthy victories in this format since the 2019 World Cup, and as a result of their dismal run, they will be missing the ODI World Cup in 2023 for the first time ever.

Only against countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, and Ireland have the West Indies won a series in this format over the past four years. They have also experienced some humiliating losses, as Ireland defeated them 2-1 once and Bangladesh thrashed them 3-0 twice in the same time frame.

However, the men in maroon can restore their confidence with a victory over 2019 world champions England as they embark on a mission to pick themselves up once again in a format they once bossed. Ideally, England wouldn't be bothered about their defeat in the opening One-Day International. They did introduce several adjustments into this series following the WC fiasco. Nothing has changed in terms of strategy, as Phil Salt demonstrated on Sunday. Although victories are crucial, in the grand scheme of things, they will be hoping that the newcomers can make an impression and challenge for spots in the event that the big names return in the future.

The West Indies will look to build on their momentum when they face England in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The hosts are coming off a thrilling one-wicket victory in the first ODI, thanks to a match-winning century from their captain, Shai Hope.

England, on the other hand, will be desperate to bounce back and level the series. They were in a commanding position in the first ODI, but they were unable to chase down the target of 304. Their batting order showed some promise, but they will need to find ways to improve their consistency.

Venue: Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua

 Date: Wednesday, December 6, 2023

 Key Players to Watch:

  • Shai Hope (West Indies): The West Indies captain led from the front in the first ODI, scoring a brilliant century to help his team to victory. He will be a key player again in the second ODI, and his form will be crucial for the hosts' chances of winning the series.
  • Shimron Hetmyer (West Indies): The young batsman showed some glimpses of his talent in the first ODI, scoring a quickfire 54. He will need to continue his good form and provide some stability to the middle order.
  • Phil Salt (England): The opener was one of the bright spots for England in the first ODI, scoring a half-century. He will need to continue his good form and give the England innings a solid start.
  • Harry Brook (England): The young batsman showed his maturity in the first ODI, scoring a composed 80. He will need to continue his good form and provide some substance to the middle order.
