The Boxing Day Big Bash clash at the SCG witnessed a dramatic upset, as the Melbourne Stars toppled the previously-unbeaten Sydney Sixers by four wickets with three balls to spare. Melbourne Stars won the toss and opted to bowl first. Batting first, Sixers struggle to bat.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Sixers stumbled out of the blocks. Opener Josh Philippe fell cheaply, putting pressure on the middle order. At the midway point, they were battling at 57/4, but Vince had given the bowlers something to work for. It looked like the home team would finish with a below-par total as Usama Mir struck three times in the first ten overs to destroy the top-order, but Vince saved them. The Englishman was 17 off 20 balls at one point, but he turned things around and finished with an 83 off 55 balls. The Sixers will feel like they are in the game even though this is not a huge total. Jack Edwards (30) offered some resistance, but the lack of partnerships saw the Sixers limp to 154/8 in their 20 overs.
In reply to this, the Stars' chase got off to a flying start thanks to Harper & Webster’s explosive power. The BBL king smashed 38 off just 17 balls, including four sixes, before departing in the fourth over. However, he had set the momentum for his team. With the early fireworks dimming, Hilton Cartwright and Beau Webster steadied the Stars' innings. The pair built a crucial partnership of 50 runs, navigating the middle overs with patience and discipline.
While wickets kept falling at the other end, Cartwright held firm. He remained composed, playing smart shots and accumulating runs steadily. His unbeaten 47 proved to be the match-winning knock.
When the Stars lost 4 wickets for 66 runs, fears of another poor batting display surfaced but Webster and Cartwright stitched a fifty partnership. The Sixers tried to pull things back towards the end but Cartwright held one end tight and batted sensibly to get his team over the line.
Despite the drama, the Stars kept their cool and closed out the game with three balls to spare. The victory ended the Sixers' unbeaten run and gave them their first taste of defeat in the BBL season.
