Since 2013, India will host the 50-over Women’s World Cup in 2025 for the first time.
Reportedly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has earned the hosting rights for the Indian Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricket
World Cup 2025. In the ICC board meeting in Birmingham, the authorities called the shots for the venue.
The Women's Cricket World Cup will be the fifth time to be hosted in India; the last time it was held in 2016 simultaneously with the Men’s World Cup when India hosted the T20 World Cup.
The upcoming Women’s World Cup will follow the 2022 edition format, with eight teams facing each other in a total of 31 matches.
Amidst the
cricket news about the confirmed venue and host for the 2025 World Cup, ICC has also affirmed Bangladesh, England, and Sri Lanka as the host for forthcoming World Cup events. With ICC’s declaration, the second time host Bangladesh will organise the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 while England taking charge of the 2026 edition for the first time after 2009.
The responsibility of the 2027 edition of the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy is on Sri Lanka’s court and they are already qualified for the event.
However, the inaugural edition to scale the trophy will be conducted in 2026 in the T20 format with 6 teams battling across 16 matches.
Under the supervision of the Board Sub-committee chaired by Martin Snedden accompanying Clare Connor, Sourav Ganguly, and Ricky Skerritt on the competitive bidding process, the host for the World Cup were picked. The committee came up front with their ideas and recommendations for each bid complying with the rules of ICC management and ICC accepted the proposal.
The President of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly stated, ‘We were keen on hosting the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025
and we are glad we have won the hosting rights for this marquee clash on the women’s calendar. India hosted the 50-over women’s World Cup in 2013 and the sport has undergone tremendous transformation since then. The popularity of women’s cricket is rapidly rising, and this is a step in the right direction. The BCCI will work closely with the ICC and fulfil all the requirements.
’ Moreover, the Honorary Secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah said, ‘ We are delighted to host the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and let me tell you that the BCCI will leave no stone unturned to make it a memorable event for everyone concerned. We are taking several steps to raise the profile of the sport right from the grassroots level and hosting the World Cup will further boost the popularity of the sport in the country. The BCCI remains committed to women’s cricket in India. We have the infrastructure in place, and I am confident we will have a very successful edition of the World Cup.’
In the T20 World Cup 2022, the Indian women's cricket squad couldn’t lift the cup. Let’s look at the reasons why the team fall apart:
To play on the field, team India had limited resources to employ the right players for particular roles, unlike Australia which is dominant with rich resources. In the past event, the team dropped top order batter Shikha Pandey and Jemimah Rodrigues who played a great pace attack to favour the game to their side.
Against the cricket giants, the Indian women's squad was lacking uniformity and the prefixed combinations were glaring play the matches. The right-handed batter, Mithali Raj who used to play at 3, dropped down her batting order against Australia. When Shefali couldn’t pick her pace against Pakistan, she was ruled out for further three matches.
Alongside, Poonam Yadav was allowed to appear only in one match against Bangladesh.
Before the Australia tour, India must have streamlined the order and playing squad to avoid the embarrassing walk-off from the cricket ground.
In the T20 World Cup 2022, Australia, England, South Africa, and West Indies were the four finalists. The captains of these four teams showcased some great performances that were impressive. Meanwhile, the captain of the Indian Women's cricket team, Mithali Raj seemed to be missing out on her tactical acumen. There were glaring chinks in her leadership skills.
During the tournament, a poor batting factor seemed to be inconsistent. Deepti Sharma from the Indian squad nearly could bring the team to the victory line against South Africa but it went down below average against Willow. In the opener five innings of the match, she managed to score 62 runs that includes 40 against Pakistan.
