As part of their current tour, New Zealand will play a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Since drawing their previous series against England back in August of this year, the Kiwis have not participated in a match in this format. Early in that series, New Zealand trailed 2-0. With two straight victories, they swiftly recovered to tie the series. In the last match, New Zealand defeated England by six wickets. With Mitchell Santner bowling well, the Kiwis were able to stop the English at 175 points. Tim Seifert, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman combined for 40 runs in the second half to help them win handily. Their current objective is to secure an early series win, this time against Bangladesh.
On December 27, McLean Park will host New Zealand and Bangladesh's first Twenty20 International match. In July of this year, Bangladesh's final match in the format was against Afghanistan. They won the second game by six wickets via DLS, and they went on to win the series 2-0. In their previous match of the current trip, they defeated the Kiwis in the ODI, which gave them more momentum. In their next match, it will be interesting to see if they can surprise New Zealand on home soil.
This year, Bangladesh has won more Twenty20 international matches than they have lost, including wins in the Asian Games with a reserve squad. When examining the annual T20I records since 2006, they have only accomplished this twice. Given that Bangladesh has not historically been at its best in Twenty20 cricket, their run of victories this year, which included a 3-0 clean sweep of England, speaks volumes about their progress in the game. Nevertheless, they have only triumphed in Asia thus far this year, so facing New Zealand at home will be a double challenge.
Although Bangladesh isn't known for their big-hitting abilities in the shortest format, as they prepare for the T20 World Cup, they have a lineup that can compete with some of the best teams in the world. In the 20-over format of international cricket, this will also be Najmul Hossain Shanto's maiden assignment as captain. He will be keen to contribute right away.
The fact that Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 98 runs in the last ODI to win their first-ever 50-over match in New Zealand would encourage the team even more. Still, they will need to swiftly change their thinking to fit T20 cricket.
Even with several of its important cricket players out of the lineup, New Zealand has a fairly stable lineup. New Zealand's batting lineup is well-rounded, with many of all-round alternatives, elite spinners, and seasoned pacers. They also have a lot of hitting power. In August and September, they played their final Twenty20 International match in England, where they emerged victorious 2-2 in the series after losing the first two games.
