Bangladesh Premier League 2024, Match 1: Durdanto Dhaka Started Their Campaign with 5-Wicket Win Against Comilla Victorians

The opening match of BPL 2024 was played at Shere Bangla National Stadium. Durdanto Dhaka won the toss and opted to field.

A dream start turned into a nightmare for the Comilla Victorians on their quest for victory. Opener Imrul Kayes and Towhid Hridoy laid a solid foundation, stitching together a century partnership (107) that seemed to set the stage for a dominant total. Yet, their carefully constructed platform crumbled spectacularly, leaving the Victorians stranded at a meager 143 all out.

The architect of this astonishing turnaround was none other than the fiery Shoriful Islam. Unleashing a spell of raw pace and accuracy, he ripped through the middle order, claiming a magnificent hat-trick in the space of just four deliveries. The wickets of Moin Ali, Mosaddek Hossain, and Farhad Reza tumbled in quick succession, leaving the Victorians reeling at 114/4.

Taskin Ahmed delivered the final blow in the penultimate over, claiming two crucial wickets to snuff out any hope of a late revival. Khusdil Shah did manage a couple of lusty sixes in the closing overs, but it was ultimately a case of too little, too late. The Comilla innings fizzled out without ever taking flight, leaving a stunned silence in the stadium.

The blame for this dramatic collapse lies squarely on the shoulders of the Comilla batsmen. After losing their openers cheaply, Kayes and Towhid provided some much-needed stability, but once they departed, the rest of the lineup imploded under the pressure. The sticky wicket proved to be a major factor, offering unpredictable bounce and making stroke-making difficult. However, the Victorians' inability to adapt and build on their early foundation remains the biggest takeaway from this disappointing performance.

Dhaka roared back to life in the Bangladesh Premier League with a thrilling victory over Khulna Tigers, chasing down a target of 143 with 3 balls to spare. The win was built on a rock-solid opening stand of 101 between Gunathilaka and Naim who provided the platform for a comfortable chase despite a late wobble.

With the Dhaka openers laying such a strong foundation, the required rate was never a serious concern.

Tanvir, in particular, was unplayable, bamboozling Dhaka's batsmen with his googly and leg-break deliveries. He ended with figures of 3-25, including the crucial wickets of Iqbal and Shakib. Tanvir and Khushdil also chipped in with wickets, reducing Dhaka from a comfortable position to needing 13 runs off the final over.

Dhaka's victory was a testament to their superior batting, particularly in the powerplay overs. Perera and Iqbal's opening stand laid the foundation for the chase, and even though they lost wickets in the middle overs, the required rate was always within reach. Khulna's bowlers deserve credit for pulling things back with some clever spin bowling, but Dhaka ultimately had too much firepower in the end.

The win will be a huge boost for Dhaka's confidence as they kickstart their BPL campaign with two vital points. Khulna, on the other hand, will be disappointed to have let slip a winning position, but they will take heart from the impressive performances of their spinners. Both teams will go back to the drawing board as the BPL promises to be a thrilling and unpredictable tournament.
