Asia Cup, 2023: Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, Preview

The last match of the group stage will be played between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka and this is a do or die match for Afghanistan. Sri Lanka has gained their confidence back in the last few years and won the Asia Cup in the last few years.

In their last match, Sri Lanka won the match by 5 wickets after a tremendous bowling performance. However, Sri Lanka is more dependent on the spinner. While chasing their top-order failed but Charith Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama made a partnership for the fourth wicket and ensured that their team crossed the finishing line. Matheesha Pathirana was the successful wicket-taker with 4 wickets, followed by M Theekshana with 2, and Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, and Dhananjaya de Silva shared one wicket each.

Afghanistan has established themselves against the big teams. Spinners have been the backbone of the team but they have failed to deliver against Bangladesh. Gulbadin and Mujeeb were the only successful bowlers who took one wicket each. In the batting department, the Afghanistan team also needs to focus on improvement. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Ibrahim Zadran scored a half-century but other batters couldn’t take advantage of the great start.
