Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers said he had eye surgery for a retinal detachment earlier this year and was again ruled out playing top-level competitive cricket matches. On Monday, October 3, the renowned batter talked openly about his surgery while interacting with his followers on social media.

In May 2018, AB de Villiers announced his retirement from international cricket. Despite this, he kept playing in T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League. De Villiers declared his retirement from all aspects of the game in November 2021. As a result, he did not participate in the IPL 2022 for the team Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Fans were urging AB de Villiers to review his call and come back to the field, but on Monday, October 3, the former South Africa batter confirmed that he has no such plans.

However, De Villiers stated that he plans to visit the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during IPL 2023 to express his gratitude to all the Bengaluru supporters for their support over the years while he was part of IPL. 

"I will go to Chinnaswamy Stadium next year. But not for playing cricket. I am going to apologize to the RCB fans for not winning the IPL title so far. I also want to thank them for their support over the past decade. I can't play cricket anymore. Because I had surgery on my right eye," said De Villiers, adding he plans to start a YouTube channel, and Virat Kohli will be one of his first guests.

In addition, he revealed that Legends League Cricket offered him the chance to play the game, but he declined due to his eye surgery.

"I am too old now. Legends League seems to be a lot of fun. I was invited, but I had an eye operation. I know you might think that I can play with one eye but I would rather not do that," de Villiers said.

After playing at the highest level of cricket for 18 years, he stated he wanted to pass on his expertise to the upcoming generation of players. However, he denied coaching a professional team shortly since he wants to spend time with his family.

"I am definitely not planning to coach a team. I absolutely love to share everything that I have learnt, that will definitely come. But I am not going to be joining a team, coaching, and traveling the world again. I am very happy to spend a bit of time at home after traveling for 18 years," he added.
